Common Tote Issues

Tote Facing Backward

Totes facing backwards is the most common mistake we find in the field. Our trucks use an automatic arm to lift the totes and dump the contents into the top of the truck. When the tote is facing backwards, this causes many issues such as: damaging the top, not allowing all the trash to dump, causing trash to fall out onto the ground and not into the truck.

Totes Overflowing

Another common issue is totes overflowing with the lid not being able to close properly. Again, this will cause several issues. The biggest issue is that is allows the trash to be exposed to the elements. Trash bags could be knocked over and the bags split open to allow the trash to scatter in the neighborhood. It is easy access for animals who again will spread the trash throughout the area.

Trash Outside the Tote

The issue with the bagged trash outside the tote is that our trucks use an automatic arm that grabs onto the tote and dumps it. The arm is programmed to pick up only a certain type of tote. To be able to pick up the bags of trash outside the tote the driver would need to dump the tote then get out of the truck place the bags into the tote and then get into the truck to dump the tote again. We do not want our drivers getting out of the truck for safety and other reasons.

Tote Not Accessible to Truck

The trucks we use have automatic arms that reach out and grab the tote, lifting and dumping into the truck. The arm needs a 3 ft radius to be able to grab the tote. When the tote is too close to something we will pass it so not to damage whatever item it may be nearby.

Trash Not Bagged in Tote

Trash that is not bagged into a trash bag can easily fall out when the tote is lifted to be dumped into the truck. It will also attract animals to your tote.

Tote too Heavy

With using a automatic arm the hydraulic system can only handle so much weight when lifting the tote. The biggest cause of the tote becoming too heavy is when the lid isn't sealed, and water accumulates in it. The tote will be passed if it is too heavy to pick up.
